Today, with heavy hearts, we mourn the passing of a remarkable son of Ghana, Professor Daniel Debagah. His departure leaves an irreplaceable void in the academic community, the Upper West Region, and the nation he served with distinction.
Professor Debagah was a man whose life exemplified scholarship, wisdom, humility, and selfless service. As an accomplished academic, he devoted his life to the pursuit of knowledge and to nurturing generations of students. He believed that education was not merely a means of personal advancement but the foundation upon which prosperous communities and strong nations are built.
Beyond the lecture halls, Professor Debagah answered the call to public service with the same dedication that defined his academic career. His election to the Council of State as the representative of the Upper West Region was a testament to the confidence that the people reposed in his wisdom, integrity, and sound judgment. In that high office, he offered thoughtful counsel, placing national interest above personal gain.
As Chairman of the Governing Council of Wa Technical University, he championed excellence in tertiary education and worked tirelessly to strengthen technical and vocational education, knowing that it remains indispensable to Ghana's development.
Professor Debagah's greatness, however, was not confined to academia and public office. He was a revered custodian of the rich history, traditions, and customs of the Dagaaba people. His deep understanding of Dagaaba culture made him a treasured source of wisdom, to whom chiefs, elders, scholars, and ordinary citizens alike turned for guidance on matters of tradition, history, and customary law. Having ascended to the revered stool as the Chief of Nyimbali, he embraced his traditional responsibilities with the same humility, dignity, and commitment that characterised every aspect of his life.
His passing is, therefore, not only the loss of an accomplished professor and statesman but also the silencing of a living library of Dagaaba history and culture. His people will deeply miss the wealth of knowledge he carried—knowledge painstakingly acquired through years of study, experience, and devotion to preserving the identity and heritage of his ancestors. Future generations will remember him as one who bridged the worlds of modern scholarship and cherished tradition, proving that intellectual excellence and cultural pride can walk hand in hand.
Yet, those who knew him will remember him not only for the offices he held but for the man he was. He was approachable, gracious, and generous with his time and knowledge. He mentored many, encouraged the discouraged, and inspired countless young people to pursue excellence with humility. His calm disposition, intellectual depth, and unwavering commitment to justice earned him admiration across political, academic, and traditional divides.
The Upper West Region has lost one of its finest sons. The Dagaaba Kingdom has lost a wise traditional leader and an irreplaceable custodian of its heritage. Ghana has lost a distinguished scholar, a wise counsellor, and a patriotic citizen. His legacy, however, will continue to live in the institutions he strengthened, the lives he transformed, the traditions he preserved, and the values he embodied.
Though death has silenced his voice, it cannot erase the impact of his life's work. His memory will endure in every student he inspired, every policy he helped shape, every tradition he safeguarded, and every life he touched with kindness and wisdom.
As we bid farewell to Professor Daniel Debagah, let us not dwell only on our sorrow but celebrate a life that was richly lived in service to humanity. May his enduring example challenge us to pursue excellence, preserve our cultural heritage, serve selflessly, and leave our communities better than we found them.
Professor Daniel Debagah, your earthly journey has ended, but your legacy remains. You fought the good fight. You finished your course with honour. You have left footprints that time cannot erase.
May the Almighty grant you eternal rest, and may your ancestors receive you with honour. May perpetual light shine upon you, and may the values you lived by continue to inspire generations yet unborn.
Rest well, Professor Daniel Debagah. Scholar. Statesman. Traditional Ruler. Custodian of Dagaaba Heritage. Your memory will forever remain a blessing.
