Students across the ten educational circuits in the Nadowli-Kaleo District received a major boost to their sporting activities following a generous donation by philanthropist and politician David Jawara Banye at the opening ceremony of the 2026 Inter-Circuit Sports and Athletics Competition, held in Kaleo, Upper West Region.
The donation, made through the D.B Jawara Foundation, included ten sets of football jerseys, ten footballs, nine trophies, 20 medals, and 100 bags of sachet water, also known as "pure water". The items were presented to support the successful organisation of the district-wide sporting event and to encourage youth participation in sports.
Receiving the items on behalf of the district, the Nadowli-Kaleo District Director of Education, Madam Vivian Nyikang, expressed profound gratitude to Mr Jawara Banye for what she described as a timely and significant contribution to sports development in the district.
She commended the philanthropist for his continuous support of educational and youth development initiatives and appealed to other sons and daughters of the district to emulate his example by contributing to the growth of sports and education.
Madam Nyikang noted that sports should no longer be viewed merely as a recreational activity but as a viable avenue for career development and economic empowerment. She therefore encouraged students to take sporting activities seriously, stressing that discipline, commitment, and hard work could open doors to numerous opportunities in the future.
Representing Mr David Jawara Banye at the event, Mr Francis Angbabora Baaladong explained that the donation followed a request from teachers within the Kaleo Circuit who sought support in acquiring sporting kits for the competition.
According to him, rather than limiting the assistance to a single circuit, Mr Jawara Banye decided to extend the support to all ten circuits in the district to ensure that more students benefited from the intervention.
Mr Baaladong further disclosed that the donation was made through the Jawara Foundation, a non-governmental organisation founded by Mr Jawara Banye. He said the foundation is dedicated to youth development and women's empowerment, particularly within the Nadowli-Kaleo District.
He indicated that the foundation would continue to support youth-focused programmes and provide assistance to vulnerable women across the district as part of its broader commitment to community development.
In addition to the sporting items donated, Mr Jawara Banye also sponsored media coverage of the event by engaging one of the leading radio stations in the Upper West Region to provide live coverage and extensive reportage of the competition.
The gesture was widely applauded by participants, teachers, education officials, and community members, many of whom described the donation as a major contribution towards promoting sports and nurturing young talents within the district.
The 2026 Inter-Circuit Sports and Athletics Competition brought together students from all ten educational circuits in the Nadowli-Kaleo District to compete in various sporting disciplines while fostering unity, teamwork, and healthy competition among learners.
