Nadowli-Kaleo District Assembly Donates Relief Items to Dry Spell and Flood Victims

The Nadowli-Kaleo District Office of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), in collaboration with the Nadowli-Kaleo District Assembly, has distributed relief items to victims affected by recent floods and prolonged dry spells in parts of the district.

The beneficiaries were drawn from the Da Dambaa Electoral Area, Kul Pieni Kpaala, Dapuore, Kandmwini Vogoni, and Charikpeng communities, where several households suffered severe losses following adverse weather conditions. While some residents had the roofs of their houses ripped off by heavy rains and storms, many farmers saw their crops washed away by floods. Others also suffered devastating losses as their farms dried up during the prolonged dry spell.

The relief exercise forms part of government efforts to support vulnerable households and help affected families recover from the disasters that have disrupted their livelihoods.

Presenting the items to the victims, the District Chief Executive (DCE) for Nadowli-Kaleo assured residents of the government's continued commitment to supporting communities affected by natural disasters. She expressed hope that the relief items would go a long way toward easing the hardships faced by the victims and improving their living conditions as they work to rebuild their lives.

The relief package included blankets, cooking oil, rice, and maize, among other essential items aimed at providing immediate assistance to affected households.

The DCE also used the occasion to caution residents against building on waterways and flood-prone areas. According to her, the construction of houses on natural water channels remains one of the major causes of flooding in many communities, destroying property and causing loss of livelihoods.

She urged residents to strictly adhere to planning regulations and prioritise their safety by avoiding unauthorised developments along waterways.

The exercise was also marked by moments of grief and reflection as attention was drawn to the tragic loss of two children in Navili, who reportedly drowned in a dam. The unfortunate incident has left the community in deep sorrow and served as a painful reminder of the dangers posed by unprotected water bodies, particularly during periods when children are likely to be playing outdoors.

The DCE extended her deepest sympathies to the bereaved families and offered words of comfort and encouragement. She conveyed the condolences of the government and the District Assembly to the affected families, urging them to remain strong during this difficult period of mourning.

Community members who received the relief items expressed gratitude to NADMO, the District Assembly, and the government for responding to their plight. They described the intervention as timely and appealed for continued support, particularly for affected farmers and families whose sources of livelihood have been severely impacted.

Some beneficiaries noted that the combined effects of flooding and prolonged dry spells had left many households struggling to meet their basic needs, making the relief support a welcome intervention.

The exercise underscores the importance of disaster preparedness, environmental responsibility, and collective efforts to mitigate the impact of climate-related disasters across the district.
