The Nadowli-Kaleo District came alive with colour, inspiration, and meaningful dialogue as women from across the district gathered to celebrate the 2026 edition of International Women's Day. The occasion provided a platform for women not only to celebrate their achievements but also to reflect on their role in community development and economic empowerment.

The event, hosted under the leadership of the District Chief Executive, Madam Mary Haruna, brought together women from various communities who shared a moment of fellowship, networking, and engagement on issues affecting their lives and the development of the district.

In her address, Hon. Mary Haruna urged women to remain united and supportive of one another. She emphasised the importance of building strong networks among women, encouraging them to come together, share ideas, and support each other in their personal and business endeavours. According to her, collective support among women remains a powerful force for social and economic transformation within communities.

The DCE also used the opportunity to highlight several government initiatives aimed at empowering women and the youth. Notably, she hinted at the introduction of a Women’s Bank initiative by the government, which is expected to provide financial support to women entrepreneurs and help expand their businesses. She explained that the initiative would offer women improved access to credit and financial resources, thereby strengthening their economic independence.

Hon. Haruna further encouraged participants to take advantage of other government programmes designed to create opportunities for self-employment. Among the initiatives she mentioned was the Feed Ghana Programme, which seeks to promote agriculture and food production across the country. She urged women to encourage their children and wards to participate in such programmes, particularly in areas such as peasant farming, poultry production, animal rearing, and vocational training.

She noted that these programmes also include apprenticeship opportunities that can equip young people with practical skills and handwork that lead to self-reliance and entrepreneurship.

The District Chief Executive emphasised that the central government alone cannot absorb the growing number of unemployed youth into public sector jobs. She therefore advised parents and guardians to guide their children toward self-employment opportunities through agriculture, vocational training, and small-scale enterprises.

Beyond the speeches and discussions, the celebration created a lively atmosphere of unity and appreciation. The women present shared meals, exchanged ideas, and strengthened bonds through networking sessions that allowed them to discuss community development from diverse perspectives.

One of the highlights of the programme was a free health screening and counselling session, which provided participants with the opportunity to check their health status and receive professional advice on maintaining healthy lifestyles.

At the close of the event, each woman received a special gift from Hon. Mary Haruna as a token of appreciation for their contributions to the development of their families and community.

The celebration ended on a hopeful note, with many participants expressing optimism about the future and the opportunities that lie ahead for women in the district.

As the district joined the rest of the world to mark International Women's Day, the message from Nadowli-Kaleo was clear: when women are empowered, communities thrive.

Indeed, it can only get better from here. The district proudly salutes all women in and around its communities for their resilience, dedication, and invaluable role in shaping a better society.
