Sombo, Nadowli-Kaleo District — The District Chief Executive (DCE) for the Nadowli-Kaleo District, Hon. Mary Haruna, has graced the coronation ceremony of the newly enskinned Pognaa of the Sombo Traditional Area, an event marked by rich cultural display, unity, and strong advocacy for women’s participation in leadership.

The arrival of the DCE and her entourage at the durbar grounds was met with melodious drumming and traditional songs, creating a festive atmosphere that drew cheers from the gathered crowd. Hon. Haruna, who is herself a royal from Kaleo, briefly but gracefully joined in the traditional dance, showcasing her royal flair to the admiration of chiefs, elders, and spectators.

The ceremony attracted traditional rulers, elders, and Pognaamine from neighbouring communities, all of whom gathered to lend support to the Sombo Traditional Area. The colourful display of traditional regalia by the audience added to the beauty and pageantry of the occasion.

In a demonstration of religious harmony, the ceremony commenced with Christian prayers, followed by Islamic prayers, after which the Tindaaba (custodian landlords) invoked the blessings and protection of the ancestors and gods of the land to ensure a peaceful and successful coronation.

Following the prayers, the coronation rites were performed, officially enskinning Madam Julina Sunkari as Pognaa Siemama Banaangsoa I. In her private life, the new Pognaa is a teacher at Kaleo Senior High Technical School, where she serves in the Home Economics Department.

Delivering a keynote address, Hon. Mary Haruna commended the traditional authorities for recognising and embracing the role of women in decision-making within traditional governance systems. She noted that women are naturally compassionate and that their inclusion brings balance and enhanced wisdom to leadership decisions that drive development.

According to the DCE, involving women in traditional decision-making processes not only empowers them but also fosters a sense of belonging and inclusion. She emphasised that peace and stability remain essential ingredients for sustainable development in the district.

“As someone deeply committed to women’s empowerment, I am encouraged by the growing recognition of women’s roles in our traditional structures,” she stated, urging women to believe in their capabilities and to approach every responsibility entrusted to them with dedication and excellence.

Hon. Haruna congratulated Pognaa Siemama Banaangsoa I and wished her wisdom, strength, and success in the discharge of her duties.

On his part, the Sombo Naa expressed gratitude to all dignitaries and community members who attended the ceremony and prayed for journey mercies for those returning to their respective homes.

The ceremony climaxed with traditional dances and general merrymaking, bringing the historic coronation to a colourful and joyous close.
