The Nadowli-Kaleo District Assembly has once again demonstrated its commitment to social inclusion and human dignity by extending vital support to 172 persons living with disabilities (PWDs) across the district. The initiative, which forms part of the government’s broader effort to improve the welfare of vulnerable groups, brought hope, relief, and renewed confidence to beneficiaries whose daily struggles often go unnoticed.

According to the Assembly, out of the total number assisted, 156 individuals who are engaged in petty trading received financial support aimed at strengthening their businesses. The gesture is expected to help them expand their operations, improve their incomes, and attain greater independence. The remaining 16 beneficiaries received essential assistive gadgets, including wheelchairs, hearing aids, and other devices to aid their mobility and communication, ultimately enhancing their quality of life.

Speaking at the presentation ceremony, the District Chief Executive, Hon. Mary Haruna, urged the beneficiaries to put the support to good use. She emphasised that the money given to the traders was not “free money” to be expended carelessly, but a seed investment intended to help them grow their businesses.

She noted that although the District Assembly would have wished to offer more substantial support, the resources available were modest. Nevertheless, she expressed confidence that with proper management, even the little they received could transform their livelihoods. “If you make good use of what has been given to you, your businesses will flourish and help you live a better and more dignified life,” she advised.

Hon. Haruna also appealed to the recipients of the gadgets to take proper care of them so they would last and serve their intended purpose. She stressed that such items are not only expensive but also crucial to improving their mobility and enhancing their social participation.

The event was met with joy and heartfelt appreciation from the beneficiaries, many of whom described the support as timely and life-changing. They expressed gratitude to the District Assembly for remembering them and vowed to use the assistance responsibly. Several of the traders noted that the boost to their businesses would help them earn more income and live better lives, while those who received devices were excited about the renewed sense of independence the gadgets would bring.

The support extended to persons living with disabilities in the Nadowli-Kaleo District is a strong indication of the Assembly’s dedication to inclusive development. By empowering vulnerable individuals to sustain their livelihoods and improve their well-being, the district continues to foster a community where every citizen has the opportunity to thrive. As beneficiaries work hard to make the most of the assistance given, the gesture stands as a reminder that true development is measured not only in infrastructure, but in the upliftment of human lives and the promotion of dignity for all.
