The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Nadowli-Kaleo, Hon. Mary Haruna, has paid a courtesy call on the chiefs and elders of the entire Charikpong Paramountcy—including the Paramount Chief, divisional chiefs, sub-divisional chiefs, and village chiefs—as part of ongoing stakeholder engagements aimed at promoting peace and development in the district. Her entourage included all district security heads—the Police Commander, Immigration Commander, Fire Service Commander, and the District NIB Officer—who joined the visit to deepen collaboration on security matters.
During the visit, the District Police Commander used the opportunity to highlight the importance of the government’s ongoing Gun Amnesty initiative. He appealed passionately to the chiefs and the people to view the exercise as a crucial step toward reducing the illegal possession of firearms—an issue that has often contributed to conflicts, robberies, and general insecurity within the district and beyond.
The District Police Commander emphasised that registering firearms would enable the security services to maintain accurate records of gun ownership and effectively monitor the misuse of weapons by criminals and troublemakers. He urged the revered traditional authorities to use their influence to encourage residents to voluntarily surrender unlicensed weapons or have them duly registered.
Hon. Mary Haruna, in her address, also underscored the need for the youth to channel their energy into productive ventures rather than engaging in actions that fuel conflict. She stressed that any form of conflict, regardless of its scale, has the potential to derail development and deepen the hardships already faced by local communities. According to her, peace is essential if the district is to move forward, especially since the youth remain the backbone of future leadership.
The DCE further briefed the chiefs and people on a number of development initiatives the government intends to roll out across the district. She assured them that Charikpong and its surrounding communities would receive their fair share of these projects once implementation begins.
The chiefs and people of Charikpong expressed their excitement and appreciation for the visit. The Paramount Chief reaffirmed their unwavering support for the district’s development agenda and pledged the community’s readiness to collaborate fully with the Police Service to ensure the success of the Gun Amnesty programme. He assured the DCE that residents were prepared to register their firearms in accordance with the new policy.
During the engagement, the chiefs also highlighted several pressing concerns affecting their communities, including the poor state of road networks, challenges in accessing quality healthcare, limited potable water supply, and educational needs. They appealed to the DCE to support efforts aimed at addressing these issues to improve the living standards of their people.
In summary, the engagement strengthened collaboration between government authorities and the Charikpong Paramountcy, reinforced the importance of peace and security, and renewed hope that ongoing development initiatives will address the pressing needs of the communities.
