The 4th graduation ceremony of McCoy College of Education in the Nadowli-Kaleo District was held on Wednesday with a strong call on newly trained teachers to use their skills to uplift the standard of education in the region. The colourful event brought together key stakeholders in education, including the Chairman of the Governing Council, Prof. Bruce Kofi Banoeng Yakubu, the Principal of the College, traditional leaders, parents, and other dignitaries.

The speech of the Upper West Regional Minister, Hon. Charles Lwanga Puozuing, Esq., was delivered on his behalf by the District Chief Executive for Nadowli-Kaleo, Hon. Mary Haruna, who praised the graduates for successfully completing their rigorous four-year training.

While congratulating them, the DCE urged the new teachers to demonstrate commitment, discipline, and excellence in their future classrooms. She expressed concern over what she described as the “drastic decline of education” in the district and charged the graduates to contribute meaningfully towards reversing the trend. She reminded them that the knowledge and skills they had gained were needed now more than ever, especially in rural communities struggling with falling academic performance.

Various speakers at the ceremony echoed similar sentiments, appealing to the graduates to become agents of positive change in Ghana’s education sector. They encouraged them to uphold national values, mentor younger learners, and serve as role models in the communities where they will be posted.

The Principal of McCoy College of Education commended the students for their resilience and hard work, which culminated in their graduation. However, he emphasised that the college continues to grapple with significant infrastructural challenges. According to him, inadequate facilities have severely limited the institution’s ability to admit more qualified applicants. He appealed to the government, philanthropists, NGOs, and benevolent individuals to support the college in overcoming these obstacles.

The ceremony highlighted not only the achievements of the graduating class but also the broader challenges confronting teacher education in the region. As the graduates prepare for their postings, stakeholders hope their contributions will help strengthen the foundation of basic education across the Nadowli-Kaleo District and beyond.
