In what has been widely hailed as a progressive and unifying development, Madam Soyelleh Cecilia has officially been confirmed as the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for the Lawra Municipal Assembly. Her confirmation follows her earlier nomination by President John Dramani Mahama, a decision that drew broad commendation from residents across the Upper West Region for advancing gender inclusion and leadership diversity.
Madam Soyelleh’s confirmation marks a significant milestone, not only for the people of Lawra but also for women across the region, who view her elevation as a symbol of empowerment and progress. With the Upper West Region now having two women serving as chief executives — Madam Mary Haruna in Nadowli-Kaleo and Madam Soyelleh Cecilia in Lawra — many see this as a reflection of President Mahama’s commitment to gender equity and inclusive governance.
A proud daughter of Babile and native of Kunyukuon, Madam Soyelleh brings to her new office a wealth of experience in education, administration, and community development. She has served with distinction at the Wa Technical Institute, where her hard work, discipline, and leadership have earned her deep respect among colleagues and students alike.
Her educational and professional background demonstrates a firm grasp of the challenges and opportunities in local governance. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Integrated Development Studies from the University for Development Studies (UDS) and is pursuing an MPhil in Development Studies at the same institution. Over the years, she has also contributed meaningfully to youth development and local politics, serving in leadership roles such as Minority Leader of the UDS Student Parliament, Vice President of the Babile Area Youth Association (BAYA), and Treasurer of the NDC’s Upper West Regional Communication Team.
Her confirmation comes at a critical time, following the unfortunate passing of the late MCE, Alhaji Muazu Adams. Many residents see Madam Soyelleh’s leadership as an opportunity to continue his developmental agenda and unite the municipality around a shared vision of growth, peace, and progress.
The people of Lawra are, therefore, being called upon, particularly assembly members, traditional rulers, and opinion leaders, to give Madam Soyelleh their full support. Her success as MCE will depend on unity, collaboration, and constructive dialogue between the Assembly and the people it serves.
In turn, Madam Soyelleh is encouraged to remain open to good counsel, uphold transparency, and prioritise the needs of her people above all else. With her track record of dedication and her deep roots in community service, there is strong confidence that she will deliver transformative leadership for Lawra.
The people of the Upper West Region, especially women, have expressed immense joy over her confirmation and that of Madam Mary Haruna. They see in these appointments a renewed hope that more women will be trusted with key leadership roles in governance, a shift that promises to bring balance, empathy, and inclusivity into public service.
Finally, special appreciation goes to His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) for honouring their promise to promote gender equity through such strategic appointments. Madam Soyelleh Cecilia’s confirmation is not just a personal victory but a testament to what women can achieve when given the platform to serve.
Her story is one of perseverance, integrity, and service and her leadership is expected to usher in a new era of progress for the people of Lawra.
