The recent re-election of Alassane Ouattara in Côte d’Ivoire is not just another African election story—it is the latest chapter in France’s desperate attempt to retain its crumbling influence in West Africa. As Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger boldly turn their backs on their former colonial master, France seems determined to hold on to its last surviving ally in the subregion, even if it means propping up a visibly ageing and dependent president.
It is no secret that Ouattara’s political survival is deeply tied to French interests. His continued stay in power mirrors France’s fear of losing the last thread of its control in Francophone West Africa. The script is familiar: the same political manipulations, the same economic exploitation, and the same puppet leadership sustained by foreign influence rather than the will of the people.
But what France fails to realise is that the tides have turned. The so-called “rebellious” nations—Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger—are not looking back. Despite sanctions, threats, and the harsh realities of isolation, these nations have chosen sovereignty over subjugation, dignity over dependency. Their defiance sends a powerful message: Africa is waking up.
African leaders must take note. True independence is not declared—it is earned through integrity, courage, and self-reliance. The era of begging bowls and dependency politics must end. Africa is too rich in natural and human resources to continue begging from those who once enslaved and exploited her. What the continent needs is not foreign aid or grants wrapped in strings of manipulation, but the political will to harness what already lies within its borders.
The West and America know they cannot thrive without Africa. The continent’s minerals, energy reserves, fertile lands, and vibrant youth population are too precious to ignore. Yet, pride and greed prevent them from acknowledging this truth. Instead, they continue to impose ideologies, dictate policies, and fund puppet regimes that serve their interests while Africa stagnates.
Africa’s downfall is not entirely the fault of external powers—it is also rooted in internal greed, corruption, and the lack of visionary leadership. The same greed that allows leaders to sell national assets for personal gain is what keeps Africa chained to foreign dependence. And when coups erupt, it is Africans fighting Africans, while the real puppet masters watch from afar.
The divide-and-rule tactics that fueled slavery and colonialism have simply evolved. Today, they manifest through debt traps, political interference, and ideological manipulation. Until African leaders learn that unity of purpose and accountability are the real weapons of liberation, the continent will remain vulnerable.
Côte d’Ivoire’s current situation should be a lesson, not a model. No nation can build a prosperous future on the back of a tired, dependent leadership that answers to foreign interests. The youth of Africa deserve better. They deserve a continent governed by leaders who put Africa first—leaders who can stand tall without leaning on Paris, Washington, or London.
Africa must awaken to the new geopolitical realities. The future belongs to those who can think independently, act boldly, and unite strategically. The age of neo-colonial puppets must end, and the spirit of self-determination must rise once again.
It is time for Africa to reclaim her destiny—not as a pawn in global politics, but as a powerful, united force capable of defining her own path.
Africans are watching!
