The District Chief Executive (DCE) for Nadowli-Kaleo, Hon. Mary Haruna, has paid a working visit to the ongoing construction project on the Doung-Noro road, where culverts are being installed to improve accessibility for commuters, especially during the rainy season.
The road, which has long been a major concern for residents, becomes nearly impassable during heavy rains. The current project, therefore, seeks to make the stretch motorable and ease the movement of goods and people between communities.
Speaking during the inspection, Hon. Haruna expressed satisfaction with the pace of work by the contractor, commending the team for their dedication. She, however, urged them to ensure quality workmanship so that the road can stand the test of time.
“It is sometimes pathetic to see how we spend huge sums of money fixing our roads only for them to deteriorate in no time. I want this particular project to be done well so that we don’t come back to fix it again soon,” she said.
The DCE further revealed that she had directed the relevant departments in the district to regularly visit and monitor all ongoing projects to prevent shoddy work and ensure value for money.
After inspecting the road project, Hon. Mary Haruna proceeded to Doung township, where she monitored the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty (LEAP) cash disbursement exercise. The initiative supports the aged and vulnerable households across the district.
Addressing the beneficiaries, the DCE advised them to use the funds prudently, encouraging them to prioritise food and other essential needs.
“Please, use this money wisely. Buy the foodstuffs you need and save some for your other basic needs,” she advised.
She also spoke on the need for cooperation between the elderly and their caregivers, cautioning both parties against misunderstandings over the use of the funds.
“Those who are weak and cannot do anything for themselves should not hold onto the money and make it difficult for their caretakers to help them. But at the same time, caretakers should not take advantage of them or bully them,” she added.
The DCE’s visit reflects her continued commitment to ensuring accountability, transparency, and the well-being of the people of the Nadowli-Kaleo District.
