For more than two decades, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has paraded itself as a global institution for justice—a body established to prosecute those responsible for genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. But in reality, the ICC has long proven to be a political weapon aimed squarely at Africa, while the real architects of global chaos, the powerful nations that fund wars and supply the weapons, walk free.
It is no coincidence that almost every individual prosecuted by the ICC has been African. The same countries that bombed Libya, tore apart Iraq, and turned Afghanistan into a graveyard of despair have never been held accountable. Yet, they sit comfortably in their air-conditioned offices, lecturing the world about democracy and human rights. What hypocrisy!
During the recent United Nations General Assembly, several African leaders boldly exposed this imbalance, calling out the biased and selective nature of the UN Security Council, another structure controlled by the world’s superpowers. While Africa continues to beg for a permanent seat, the same powers that claim to champion equality and justice continue to ignore the call for inclusion. They prefer a system that keeps Africa on its knees, politically, economically, and judicially.
If the ICC were truly the neutral body it claims to be, its courts would have tried Western leaders whose actions have directly or indirectly led to mass deaths across the Middle East and Africa. What Israel has done to the people of Palestine, for example, is more than enough reason for the ICC to act decisively. Yet, silence greets these atrocities. Instead, it is African heads of state and military commanders who are dragged before the court, as though evil exists only on this continent.
The time has come for Africa to rise and reclaim its dignity.
If the ICC cannot be fair, then Africa must withdraw en masse from it. We must no longer lend legitimacy to a system that targets only the weak and shields the strong. Let the African Union take a bold step to establish a continental criminal court — one that can genuinely pursue justice, protect African interests, and hold all leaders accountable, not just those from poor nations.
Justice should not wear the colour of power. It should not depend on the wealth of nations. Until the ICC proves that it serves humanity rather than hegemony, Africa must walk away.
