Dan 5:1-6,13-14,16-17,23-28; Ps Dan 3:62-67 and Lk 21:12-19.
Yesterday, in our reflection, we were told about the temporality of creation, including human life. Today’s scriptures tell us more about the temporality of the world, human life, worldly power, authority, fame and positions. Daniel today interprets a vision that King Belshazzar sees, and he foretells the conquest of Babylon (Dan 5:1ff). Jesus today also predicts the persecution of his followers (and of course their impending death), but promises to aid and assist them in their time of trial and persecution.
It is a well-known fact that the foundation of creation, including human life is God. The human life can only stand firm on earth and in the life to come, without any fear and without shaking, if it is founded and built on God. Life will be weak and frail if it is not founded and built on trust and faith in God, but on the world and what the world contains, like material things/possessions, secular power, authority, prestige, fame and positions.
People shake and shiver when they hear about the end times, the end of the world, or when they hear about death, all because they are not prepared. Sometimes, it is also because people love the world and what it contains and they would wish to be in the world forever, but this is not possible. Of course, when we live a life of debauchery like the type that King Belshazzar, son of King Nebuchadnezzar lived at his time, when we see or hear about signs, predictions, and practices of the end times, we definitely will shake, shiver, and our knees will ‘dance’.
Once again, we are warned and at the same time cautioned to always be prepared, ready, vigilant and watchful for the Day of the Lord in our individual lives. There will be no warning on that day. We may not even be as lucky as King Belshazzar or the disciples of Jesus who received warnings and cautions. Let us stay awake, but do not allow anything in this world to make us drunk, for that day to surprise us. We still have a few days (up to Saturday) to assess or evaluate ourselves before the liturgical year comes to an end. Stay blessed.
