Nigeria's failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup is no surprise. From the start of the competition to the tail end, they were disappointing.
With the current crop of players, people expect them to run over teams. However, we've seen them drop points against the likes of Zimbabwe, Benin, and South Africa during the World Cup qualifiers. By time they needed the points to advance automatically to the World Cup, it was too late. They then tried to sneak their way through the playoffs, which backfired. They shouldn't have put themselves in that critical situation in the first place, knowing very well that a one-game playoff can go either way. As neighbours, we can only sympathise with them.
The World Cup needed Victor Osimhen. Players of such quality are what spectators want to see at the global stage, a gathering of football talents across the globe showcasing the beautiful game. Unfortunately, Osimhen will not be part of the next tournament. He is almost 27 years old, so age and form might not allow him to play in the subsequent tournaments.
It's not only the World Cup that will miss Osimhen, he will equally miss the World Cup. It's a tournament every footballer dreams of playing and he has missed that opportunity to show the world what he is made up of.
All in all, it's a lost situation for all interested parties in the game.
