In a commendable gesture that seeks to inspire punctuality and discipline among students, Hon. Thomas Saanaa, a senior facilitator in the Technical Department of Wa Senior High Technical School (Wa SHTS), has recognised and awarded the first male and female students who reported to school for the 2025/2026 academic year.

The awards were presented by the Headmaster, Mr Ismail Salih, during the Monday morning assembly held on 27th October, 2025. In his remarks, Mr Salih lauded the recipients for their promptness and sense of responsibility, urging all students to emulate their example. He further expressed his appreciation to Hon. Saanaa for his thoughtful initiative, describing it as a timely and motivating act that will go a long way in fostering early reporting and discipline among students.

The brief presentation was met with applause and excitement from both staff and students, setting a positive tone for the new academic year.

This initiative by Hon. Saanaa is particularly significant at a time when late reporting by students continues to hinder effective teaching and learning in many schools across the country. While some parents struggle to provide the necessary provisions for their wards to return to school on time, others face a more troubling trend — students, especially some female ones, leave home ostensibly for school but never arrive, often without the knowledge of their parents.

This growing problem has made it increasingly difficult for school authorities to ensure the safety and accountability of their students. It is therefore important for parents to verify from school management that their wards have actually reported to school after leaving home.

As a society, we must all take a keen interest in the education, safety, and moral well-being of our children, especially in these unpredictable times when alarming and mysterious incidents involving students are on the rise.

Hon. Saanaa’s initiative is a reminder that small but impactful acts of recognition can inspire positive change. His example deserves commendation and replication across other schools in the country to help promote a culture of punctuality, discipline, and academic excellence.
