The District Chief Executive of the Nadowli-Kaleo District Assembly, Hon. Mary Haruna, has commended farmers across the district for their contribution to food security and national development, describing them as the backbone of the country’s survival. She delivered the remarks on Friday, 5th December 2025, at Gbankor during the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration.

Speaking before farmers, security agencies, development partners, traditional leaders, the media, and guests, Hon. Haruna said Farmers’ Day remains a special moment to honour the “hardworking men and women whose hands feed the district, the region, and the nation.”

The DCE highlighted the significance of the occasion, noting that agriculture continues to drive household income, sustain livelihoods, and strengthen community unity. She emphasised that beyond feeding the nation, farming continues to preserve local cultural heritage, particularly indigenous crops such as millet, sorghum, groundnuts, and beans.

A major part of her address focused on the Feed Ghana Programme, introduced under President John Dramani Mahama, which she described as one of the most transformative agricultural interventions in recent years. According to her, the policy was designed to reposition agriculture as the backbone of Ghana’s economy while ensuring food security and job creation for the youth.

Hon. Haruna announced that the initiative facilitated the establishment of Farmer Service Centres across the country, giving smallholder farmers access to inputs, mechanisation services and extension support. The programme, she added, also targeted import reduction, food inflation control and the adoption of climate-smart practices to boost sustainable food production.

She called on farmers to embrace innovation through irrigation, improved seedlings, value addition and digital marketing to attract more youth into agriculture. She further explained that government agricultural programmes have made room for skills development through apprenticeship, training, and capacity-building initiatives for young people hoping to venture into farming.

Touching on current challenges confronting farmers, the DCE acknowledged the problem of market access and food glut in various communities. She announced that the government has released substantial funding to purchase surplus harvests so that farmers do not incur losses after months of toil.

“We must ensure that no harvest goes to waste,” she said, assuring farmers that the government remains committed to protecting them and strengthening Ghana’s agricultural foundation.

The colourful celebration in Gbankor brought together farmers from all corners of the district, many of whom expressed appreciation for the recognition accorded them. Awards were presented to outstanding farmers for excellence in crop and livestock production, agribusiness, and innovation. This year’s Farmers’ Day celebration in Nadowli-Kaleo ended with renewed hope — a call for greater investment in agriculture, youth involvement, and community collaboration for sustainable food security.

The Nadowli-Kaleo District Assembly also expressed gratitude to key personalities and institutions whose support contributed immensely to the success of the 2025 Farmers' Day celebration. These include:

Rt. Hon. Speaker of Parliament, an illustrious son of the district, for his continuous support for the development of the district.

Brigadier Tanye of Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority, for his personal donation and recognition of farmers as drivers of Ghana’s economic growth.

Engineers and Planning Mining Company, for their support in the event.

The overall Best Farmer was Macarius, a native of Nator, and he was given a Motorking( Tricycle) and a certificate of recognition. The 1st Runner-up position also went to Maree, who comes from Gbankor and he was also awarded a Motorbike. The 2nd Runner-up position went to Mr Cletus, a native of Chaang, who also received a motorbike. Significantly, among these awardees was the best physically challenged farmer's position which went to Balannue Inusah, and he received 2 Bags of Fertiliser, a Knapsack, Cutlasses, and Sacks. Other individuals and institutions were also awarded for their role in agriculture in the district.

Farmers left the ceremony inspired and motivated, confident that agriculture in the Nadowli-Kaleo District is growing stronger under the Feed Ghana — Eat Ghana — Secure the Future initiative.
