It's the birthday of Marie Skłodowska Curie, the woman who changed the course of science — our second scientist of the day, 07 November. We must celebrate women, and I cannot imagine a world without the mix of women. Quickly take off the negative meaning from your head.
Marie Curie was one of the most famous scientists. She was also known for her honesty and moderate lifestyle. Famous for her work on radioactivity (a term she coined), she became an icon in the scientific world and received tributes from across the globe. The element (atomic number 96) named curium after her and her husband, who initially was her lecturer. Teachers have good sight!
She was rejected by the university because of her gender, but the long story cut short is that she later went on to win two Nobel Prizes. Today we are remembering the most inspirational woman in science, Marie Skłodowska Curie, on her 158th birth anniversary. Also, we are celebrating the day's women's happy birthdays with Lise Meitner, the forgotten woman of nuclear physics.
Lise Meitner, with the assistance of her young nephew Otto Frisch, provided a physical explanation of how nuclear fission could happen. It was a massive leap forward in nuclear physics, but today she remains obscure and largely forgotten. She received many awards and honours late in her life, but she did not share the 1944 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for nuclear fission, which was awarded exclusively to Otto Hahn.
Students, pay attention! There are only two chemical elements on the periodic table named after women — Curium (96) and Meitnerium (109). Curium was named for both Marie Curie and her husband, Pierre Curie, while meitnerium was named for Lise Meitner alone. The most surprising thing is that both the special women were born on November 7.
Let us continue to appreciate those who have impacted us well in this world with all the sincerity and love deserved. Let's continue to show the genuine gratitude and love that those who have positively impacted our lives deserve. We develop a stronger sense of connection and thankfulness in our lives as a result.
In addition to celebrating their contributions, this practice encourages us to show kindness and positivity to others. We become more conscious of the beauty all around us and the possibility of deep connections as we show our gratitude. Every gesture of gratitude has the power to spread kindness and support throughout our communities.
